Previous | Home | NextAlthough the cleveite analyzed by Ramsay and Cleve to detect helium could have been found in many locations about Karlshus, it is believed by mineralogists that the probable source was the Halvorsrød Mine, more commonly known simply as the "Karlshus Mine." This mine was located 1½ km north of the present railway station.The mine was opened in 1884 and closed during the period 1910-1920. The main production was feldspar and quartz used in porcelain and glass production. A few remnants of the building stone remain, exhibiting occasional inclusions of interesting minerals, but no sign of cleveite remains.
